Recently I sat on a jury in Kitsap County. It was the first time I have ever been called to serve. For almost three weeks I sat in a windowless room, taking notes and trying to do right by all the parties involved. In a way it reminded me of a mystery story–the characters, the conflicts, the compelling back stories and settings. However interesting this experience was, I am happy to be returning to the world of the library…even more happy to appreciate our judicial system from afar.
For me, the best mysteries are decidedly fake, sprinkled with complex characters who stay safely on the page. Of course I have read one or two Ann Rule books but these were accidents. : ) She sucked me in with her engaging storytelling before I could escape! Also had this problem with the wonderful Erik Larson but I digress.
This winter I am resolving to read a bit deeper into the mystery genre, mix some old with some new. I am hoping many of you will join me on this journey. One of the aspects that drew me to librarianship was not only the love of books, but also the love of sharing that experience with other people.
